To Homeschool or Not to Homeschool
By Chin Chin
It has been a year and a half now since we enrolled our kids in a private school. We used to homeschool our 2 sons but decided to enroll them in private school. The decision for me as a homeschooling mom was not that easy because I felt so fulfilled having successfully taught them how to read, how to write, and how to do math at home. What made us decide to discontinue homeschooling them? In any decision we make, it is wise to always weigh the advantages and disadvantages of things. We felt that enrolling them in private school would address 3 pending needs of our children and our family as a whole. First is the need of our children to socialize more. I'm not saying that they don't have a social life while homeschooling. They do - in our church and in our community of friends. But they do have to learn how to associate with children their age. My second son up to now still has to cope with his over shyness. He still hasn't mastered the art of making friends with other kids his age. Second is to be able to assess and develop their level of competency. At home, they are encouraged to do their best in their studies. However, we felt that a sense of competency is lacking that sometimes they tend to just be content with what they "can" do, though they can still do better. At school, the competent spirit in our children can encourage them to do the best they can. Kids like to gain recognition for their accomplishments. This, however, can also work against them. They can become discouraged if they find themselves not performing as well as their classmates. This is a risk that we all have to take and deal with when we get there. The third is to allow us to better care for our growing family. Be better at parenting. We have 5 children now. So, after sending our 2 sons to school, I, being a stay-at-home mom, can spend more quality time with our 3 daughters. I would be able to focus on teaching them how to read, write and do math successfully from home as well. That would be rather difficult for me with 5 kids (ages 9, 7, 5, 3 and 1 year) around. I know that there are many homeschool moms who were successful at homeschooling their kids, even 5 at a time. I am happy for their success (even a little bit jealous). However, for us, this is how things worked out. We decided that it was time for our kids to transition from homeschool to private school. I hope this intel will in a way help other parents who have to cross the same bridge.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience. I was just wondering, since you are aware of the benefits of communal schooling, what made you homeschool in the first place?

Cathy, thank you for reading this intel. We decided to homeschool first our 2 sons for 3 reasons. One is we were trying to save some. The tuition fees in the place where we are presently residing are very expensive. Two, since I am staying at home and then there were only 2 children, I went ahead knowing I can teach them also. Three, I find it really fulfilling to be able to teach my children and it makes me feel proud having done so.
